Dec. 21st, 2012: Chichicastenango

Dec. 21st, 2012: Chichicastenango is a chronicle of the activities surrounding the end of the Mayan long count calendar in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Shot within a 24 hour period using a digital camera (a landmark departure from Rhody’s invariable use of film), this work drags the eyes of the viewer through the smoke plumes of ancient ritual hilltops and crowded streets filled with fireworks and trinket vendors. A day that the Western world naively misconstrued as Doomsday is navigated to instead portray the truly wide dynamics of mystery that lie behind life on planet Earth. Published as a 48 page color monograph in 2016 by Mirro Editions.
